Lots of creative mess, fun, learning and a café with good coffee and cake!
Messy Church is an all-age, creative and fun ‘fresh expression’ of church. Messy Church celebrations are for all ages and take place on Saturday afternoons from 3.00-5.00pm (as advertised). We have a separate café area, an under-three's zone and a 'peace space' for quiet reflection in the Lady Chapel - amongst the noisy, creative activities and messiness.
At St. John's, children and young people are very valued; they are free to roam and to explore the church during Messy Church (as are the adults), or to play in the children's area or wander during our services.
Messy Church is a church made up of different groups of people, based on creativity, hospitality and celebration. Messy Churches are found worldwide and is not exclusively for children and families. They are for everyone: the young and the more mature; single adults, teens; groups of friends; anyone who wants to engage in or explore their faith in a creative, fun, alternative way with creative activities and a short celebration of worship (about 15 minutes). There are people to support you and chat with if you would like.
Messy Church is for people from all faith denominations and expressions (or none) especially those with limited or no contact with a church community to come and have fun and learn about faith together and develop friendships, family, fellowship and community.
Messy Church has individual creative activities and zones based on a particular scriptural theme, a coming together for ‘celebration’, a big together ‘messy moment’ and a shared afternoon tea before going home.
There is no charge for attending Messy Church; donations towards future Messy Church resources are completely voluntary, although a donated cake towards the ‘Messy Tea’ is always welcome!
